Dick
I will miss this man, God sent, in my LIFE. He got my SANSU Masters
My First Royalty Check, but most of all made me feel my work in show business was not invain. He will always hold a special place
in my heart.

Yes, we were fortunate to be at Oji between hot wars, weren't we? Unlike where my older brother and younger brother-in-law served (Korea and Nam). But we did our duty of the time. To bad a requirement for any Fed office - PRES (and Cab) VP, Sen, HR, does not include a 2 yr stint in the military. Time for USA to stop being the worlds policeman!

Dick

A beautiful send off. Fred got Bettye her first ever royalty check. He worked tirelessly and was a good friend. He'll be missed.

Dick, Thank you for this beautiful tribute to Fred. I was a close friend of Fred's, part of a daily group of writers/music folk/movers and shakers, always fighting the good fight. I miss his voice every day, and you've captured his spirit, the very important work he did, and why his loss is devastating to musicians -- even those who never knew or met him.

I have read Ted Lawson's book about 20 times since elementary school in the 50s, including one reading in 2011 -- the film is one of my favourites and left a big impression on me as a child. The B-25 Mitchell is my favourite airplane, bar none.

"How come you're so cute?" said Ted Lawson to his wife. "I had to be, if I was gonna get such a good lookin' fella." she replied.

Yes Yes Yes. I only now read this article. I don't disagree and this has been a recent (past year) conversation within my circle. The short of my thoughts are this:

There is a huge earning gap in music. Those with the knowledge and influence are making a ton and those without, nothing. A large population of unknown songwriters would be willing to pay big money for the knowledgeable to hear their best songs. I would pay $500 for one serious consideration listen from say, a Gary Nicholson. But, that is peanuts to these influential folks and it is not considered as an additional financial opportunity.

The writers using Taxi and other pay review services encounter the various recurring issues and find it to be without influence. One friend had a song rejected in 'round 1' and that same song won American Folk song of the year two years later.

Great songs are out there, floating amongst small time producers, writers, writing groups, ect. I have heard them and i have but a mere one to my name.
They have no path from which to bubble up and once practice matches skill creating a quality tune, the understanding that 'handing out randomly' the tune doesn't work and the activity has long since ceased. Thus, you DO - Mr. Waterman, get all the hand-out crap! :>

Best,
Justin Brown
