Big news . . . first New York City exhibit . . .

Well, it only took 50 years (48+ actually) but I am going to have a major photo exhibit in New York City. It will open on Thursday, April 21, with a reception that evening and run through the end of May.

The location is the Chelsea Market which runs from 9th Avenue through to 10th Avenue at 19th Street. That used to be the wholesale meat market district and a lot of people still refer to it that way. The streets are cobblestones that do not match up so walking is at your own risk. The Chelsea Market is a collection of upscale shops and stores with office space above it. Some television networks such as IVillage, MLB.COM and others are located in the building.

They originally wanted me to have only black and white photographs of blues but I went digital in 2006 and I didn’t want to eliminate the past five years of shooting. I wanted them to avoid using the word “blues” in describing the exhibit because I’m bringing in a lot of classic rock (Janis Joplin, very nice Dylan from 1963-1965, Stones backstage, early Clapton, Dave Matthews, etc.) and also some jazz (Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Les Paul, Mose Allison).

I made certain that the people there know that this exhibit is intended to SELL and not just show the work. I gave a whole lot of thought about what to charge since most of it is original negative work. I asked around and $600.00 seemed to be the safest place to go on the low side.

So I’m planning on spending four or five days there and will be hanging around the photographs and making myself available. I might sell a few or I might sell none at all.

Well, it’s about time I gave it a shot so please stop by if you’re in the neighborhood . . .
